Mitsubishi Electric Classic marks the second time PGA TOUR Champions has played an event with Modified Stableford.
The Mitsubishi Electric Classic is the only PGA TOUR Champions event that uses the Modified Stableford scoring format, which encourages aggressive play.
Unlike traditional scoring methods, where the aim is to have the lowest score, the objective in a Modified Stableford tournament is to have the highest score.
Points structure
Modified Stableford awards points based on the number of strokes taken at each hole.
Scoring at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic will look like this:
- Albatross: 8 points
- Eagle: 5 points
- Birdie: 2 points
- Par: 0 points
- Bogey: -1 point
- Double bogey or more: -3 points
Playing strategy
The Modified Stableford strategy encourages aggressive play and rewards risk-taking.
For instance, if the professional is facing a carry over water that he normally wouldn’t try, the Modified Stableford format presents an incentive to go for it. A birdie is worth twice as many positive points (2) as a bogey is worth punitive points (-1). Eagles offer huge payoffs (5 points) and the worst a player could possibly do would be a double bogey (-3 points), at which point he could pick up his ball and carry on to the next hole.
TPC Sugarloaf’s par-72 layout has four par 5s (Nos. 4, 6, 10, 18). The 18th hole, which measures 544 yards, yielded 12 of the 22 eagles for the week in 2025 and ranked as the easiest hole. It should serve as an exciting finish yet again in 2026.
Notable events
The 2026 Mitsubishi Electric Classic will be the second time PGA TOUR Champions has played an event with Modified Stableford. The previous instance was the 2002 Uniting Fore Care Classic, played at Park Meadows Country Club in Park City, Utah.
The PGA TOUR has featured tournaments with Modified Stableford format in past years, including the Barracuda Championship (2012-2025) and The INTERNATIONAL (1986-2006). The list of past winners at The INTERNATIONAL, played at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado, includes World Golf Hall of Fame members Davis Love III (1990, 2003), José María Olazábal (1991), Vijay Singh (1998), Ernie Els (2000) and Retief Goosen (2005).
