A storm system that slammed south-central Kansas on Monday evening led to the closure of Crestview Country Club, site of this week’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Wichita Open on the Korn Ferry Tour.
The storm swept through the Wichita area late Monday and produced damaging winds as strong as 101 mph, per KWCH, a local news outlet. The storm caused damage throughout the broader Wichita community, with many losing power.
The golf course felt the impact, too. Video and photos from Crestview Country Club show extensive damage to hospitality areas as well as downed tree limbs and other debris. That caused the Korn Ferry Tour to close the course on Tuesday. They plan to re-open the golf course to players on Wednesday.
"Due to extensive storm damage throughout Wichita, the golf course and practice facilities at Crestview Country Club have been closed for the remainder of the day,” the Korn Ferry Tour said in a statement. “The agronomy team is working tirelessly to repair damages and prepare the grounds for the tournament competition. The golf course grounds are planning to reopen tomorrow morning."
The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Wichita Open is scheduled to begin Thursday, June 19. It is the first of back-to-back weeks in the Midwest on the Korn Ferry Tour. Players will play in Springfield, Illinois, next week at the Memorial Health Championship presented by LRS.
