2026 U.S. Open weather forecast: High winds expected for opening round at Shinnecock Hills

As the 126th U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club approaches, the early-week forecast is shaping up well for a spectacular championship. According to the USGA:

(Update: June 17) "The combination of a south wind and increasing humidity brings cloud cover into the region Wednesday, possibly a shower early to mid morning and again late afternoon as temperatures warm to the lower 70s. Thursday morning’s winds whirl from the get-go gusting near 20 mph, but eventually peaking at 35+ mph with the chance of a stray shower/storm. It will also become more humid Thursday with highs only in the mid 70s under more clouds than sun. Friday features wind gusts in the 20s with clouds sticking through the morning before attempting to clear at some point in the afternoon when high temps wander just above average as drier air starts to move in. A wind shift allows air to rush in from the west and northwest Saturday with gusts of 30+ mph looking likely. Sunday keeps the air moving with more westerly winds, warmth and sunshine."

"There could be some low clouds or a period of fog after the rain early Monday, otherwise northwest winds drive out the humidity and give us another mostly sunny looking day with temps a couple degrees lower than today. High pressure provides more beautiful weather Tuesday with less wind, comfortable temps and low humidity. Wednesday is not looking too bad despite there being a meager chance for some raindrops, then the wind reaches its peak Thursday with gusts surpassing 30 mph as the wind takes center stage through the weekend."
