Grew up playing at Ohio Prestwick Country Club in his longtime hometown of Uniontown, Ohio.

Frequently attended the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational when it was contested at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. One year, the Moldovans were dining at a nearby TGI Friday’s when Rory McIlroy walked in. Moldovan recalled, “I was just sitting there and he came up and started talking to me. It was pretty cool. He said to keep playing hard and keep practicing and strive for greatness.”

At 13 years old, qualified for the 2015 Drive, Chip & Putt Championship at Augusta National Golf Club.

Favorite teams are the Cleveland Browns (NFL football), Boston Celtics (NBA basketball), and Cleveland Guardians (MLB baseball).

Fan of the popular Netflix series Stranger Things.

Father, John, is a longtime teaching professional at Ohio Prestwick Country Club. John prepped at GlenOak High School in Canton, Ohio, was a two-year letterwinner at Kent State University (1986, 1987) and played professionally on mini-tours. John was inducted into the Stark County Amateur Golf Hall of Fame in 2019. John notably won the 1987 Stark County Amateur Championship, an event Maxwell won three times (2019, 2020, 2022).

Mother, Leigh, played four seasons of women’s basketball at Akron University (1989-93); she broke the school record for career 3-point field goals made (139 in 108 games) and 3-point field goal percentage (35.5 percent), and became the first player in school history to make seven 3-pointers in a game.

Amateur Highlights

Finished No. 20 in the 2024 PGA TOUR University Ranking after four seasons at Ohio State University (2020-24). Performance benefits included PGA TOUR Americas membership for the inaugural 2024 season and an exemption for Second Stage of 2024 PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry.

Played four seasons at Ohio State, where he earned four individual victories, broke school records for career scoring average (71.25) and single-season scoring average (70.64 for the 2022-23 season), and earned All-America honors in 2022 (Third Team) and 2023 (Second Team), along with All-Big Ten Conference First Team honors in 2022 and 2023.

Alongside Neal Shipley, helped Ohio State reach the semifinals of match play at the 2024 NCAA Championship. Moldovan defeated Auburn University’s Carson Bacha in the semifinals, though the Buckeyes fell to Auburn, 3-2, in what was their highest finish at the NCAA Championship since they won the team national title in 1979.

Won the 2021 Southern Amateur Championship at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi. Past champions of the event, which dates back to 1902, include Bobby Jones (1917, 1920, 1922), Lanny Wadkins (1968, 1970), Ben Crenshaw (1971, 1973), Justin Leonard (1992, 1993), Webb Simpson (2005, 2007), and Harris English (2011).

Named the 2019 AJGA Rolex Junior Player of the Year. Past recipients of the award include Phil Mickelson (1986, 1987, 1988), David Duval (1989), Tiger Woods (1991, 1992), Brian Harman (2003, 2004), Jordan Spieth (2009), Scottie Scheffler (2013), Sam Burns (2014), and Akshay Bhatia (2018).

Won the 2019 Ohio Amateur Championship. Past champions of the event, which dates back to 1904, include Arnold Palmer (1953, 1954), John Cook (1978, 1979), Ben Curtis (1999, 2000), and Jason Kokrak (2006, 2007).

Qualified for match play at four U.S. Amateur Championship (2019, 2021, 2022, 2023), with his best finishing being a Round of 16 appearance in 2022. Also reached the Round of 16 at the 2019 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship contested at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, and qualified for match play at the 2021 Western Amateur Championship.

Represented the United States at the 2019 Junior Presidents Cup. Justin Leonard captained the victorious United States team. Teammates included Michael Thorbjornsen, Preston Summerhays, and Jackson Van Paris.

Finished T4 (with Gordon Sargent) at the 2019 Junior PLAYERS Championship. Also finished solo second at the 2019 Memorial Junior, contested at the Ohio State University Golf Club (Scarlet Course), and T2 at the 2020 AJGA Invitational at Sedgefield (Country Club), which hosts the PGA TOUR's Wyndham Championship.

Prepped at Green High School in his longtime hometown of Uniontown, Ohio, where he won the individual state title at the 2017 OHSAA Division I Boys State Tournament as a sophomore. Shared the individual state title with Jackson Chandler in 2018, and finished second to Tyler Groomes in 2019. All three iterations of the OHSAA Division I Boys State Tournament were contested at the Ohio State University Golf Club (Scarlet Course).
