Won the 2019 Mitsui Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters, following Massy Kuramoto (1980), Ryo Ishikawa (2007), and Hideki Matsuyama (2011) as the fourth amateur in history to win a Japan Golf Tour event. Matsuyama's 2011 victory also came at the Mitsui Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters.
Totaled 55 weeks as the No. 1 player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking; he rose to No. 1 for the first time in August 2019, and later spent 54 consecutive weeks at No. 1 from September 2019 through September 2020, which, at the time, tied Patrick Cantlay for the most consecutive weeks at No. 1.
Won the 2020 Mark H. McCormack Medal as the world's top amateur. Past recipients of the award include Nick Taylor (2009), Patrick Cantlay (2011), Matt Fitzpatrick (2013), and Jon Rahm (2015).
Notable amateur victories included the 2015 Japan Amateur Championship and 2018 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship.
