Grew up in Barrika, Spain and is a loyal supporter of the Athletic Club Bilbao. Participated in sports and activities such as soccer, canoeing, jai alai and kung fu as a child before focusing on golf.

Met his wife, Kelley, while the two were students at Arizona State University. Kelley was a javelin thrower for the track and field team.

Proposed to Kelley during a hike at Torrey Pines Preserve in 2018. Earned his first PGA TOUR title (2017 Farmers Insurance Open) and first major championship victory (2021 U.S. Open) at Torrey Pines Golf Course.

His favorite player and inspiration was Seve Ballesteros.

Amateur Highlights

Worked his way up to the top spot in the World Golf Amateur Rankings.

Became the first player to win the Ben Hogan Award twice (2015-16), which is awarded to the best player in collegiate golf.

Winner of the 2016 Jack Nicklaus award, given annually to Division I top collegiate golfer.

Recorded 11 collegiate victories at Arizona State, second only to former Sun Devil Phil Mickelson's 16 wins.

Posted a 4-under 212 to win the 2016 NCAA Albuquerque Regional on May 16-18, marking his fourth victory of the season and 11th overall.

With a four-day 12-under 272 score, won the 2016 Pac-12 Individual title.

Won the 2015 NCAA San Diego regional during his junior season.

Three-time All-Pac-12 first-team member.

Winner of the 2015 Mark H. McCormack Medal.

Won the 2014 World Amateur Championship, breaking a record held by Jack Nicklaus in the process.

Back-to-back winner at the Spanish Amateur (2014-15).
