Played one season at Arizona State University (2008-09), recording the fifth-lowest scoring average in program history by a freshman at that time (72.20).

Won the 2009 Pacific Coast Amateur, an annual event whose past winners include Michael Putnam (2004), Ben Crane (1998), Jason Gore (1997), and Billy Mayfair (1987 and 1988). Winners who followed Kim included Andrew Putnam (2010), Aaron Wise (2015), Will Zalatoris (2016), and Doug Ghim (2017).

Won the 2008 and 2010 Arizona Stroke Play Championships, both of which were contested on the Champions Course at TPC Scottsdale.

Won the 2007 Hawaii State Amateur.
