NEWBURGH, Ind. – Pierceson Coody withdrew before the second round of the Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance due to a wrist injury.
Coody had entered the Korn Ferry Tour finale in a tie for 44th on the Finals Eligibility Points List, with the top 25 finishers on the three-event standings earning PGA TOUR membership for 2022-23.
Coody, the reigning No. 1 on the PGA TOUR University Velocity Global Ranking, won the Live and Work in Maine Open in June to secure fully exempt Korn Ferry Tour status for next season.
Coody’s manager Mike Chisum issued this statement Friday morning:
“Pierceson injured his forearm hitting a shot out of the rough at last week’s Korn Ferry Tour Finals event. Pierceson tried to push through the injury this week and compete for a PGA TOUR card but, unfortunately, it became too much of a hindrance.
"After his morning warmup and evaluation, it was determined it would be best for Pierceson to rest and further assess the issue with his doctors in Plano.
"Pierceson looks forward to competing in PGA TOUR events this fall, in addition to being a fully exempt member of the Korn Ferry Tour next season.”
Coody opened the Finals with a T32 at the Albertsons Boise Open presented by Chevron, then missed the cut at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship, where he suffered the aforementioned forearm injury. The 22-year-old opened the Korn Ferry Tour Championship in even-par 72 on Thursday afternoon at Victoria National GC.
Coody and his twin brother Parker, a winner on PGA TOUR Canada this summer, helped the University of Texas to this year’s NCAA Division I men’s golf title.
Coody turned professional after the NCAAs in early June, gaining automatic Korn Ferry Tour membership with a top-five finish on the PGA TOUR University Velocity Global Ranking. The Texas native recorded three top-10s in eight Korn Ferry Tour Regular Season starts, including a five-stroke win in Maine, to qualify for the Korn Ferry Tour Finals.
The top 25 finishers on the Finals Eligibility Points List will earn PGA TOUR membership at the conclusion of the Korn Ferry Tour Championship, and they will alternate position on the 2022-23 PGA TOUR Priority Ranking with the top 25 finishers on the season-long standings.
