PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland – For the first time in Collin Morikawa’s career, he will not finish inside the top 10 in at least one of the year’s four major championships.
Morikawa backed up a disappointing first-round 75 with a similarly disappointing 74 on Friday to miss the cut at The Open Championship, his third missed cut at The Open since he won the event in 2021.
Known early in his career as a closer in major championships, Morikawa had amassed an impressive streak of five straight seasons with at least one top-10, beginning with his 2020 PGA Championship victory. In three of those seasons, Morikawa amassed multiple top-10s. In 2024, his worst major championship finish was a T16.
While Morikawa has played well at other events in 2025, he could never get it going in the majors. Morikawa’s best major finish of 2025 was a T14 at the Masters. He did not contend at the PGA Championship, finishing T50, nor the U.S. Open, a T23 finish.
Windless conditions to finish Friday’s second round spurred some movement in the cutline, projected for much of the day at 2-over but eventually settling at 1-over. That meant the likes of Jason Day, Ben Griffin and Joaquin Neimann found themselves just on the other side of the cut and headed home.
There was no drama for Patrick Cantlay, though. He struggled to gain momentum all week, carding rounds of 73-72 to miss the cut. Cantlay’s major year was even more disappointing than Morikawa. After a T36 at the Masters, Cantlay missed the cut in the last three majors of the year. Before this year, Cantlay had missed just three major cuts in his career.
After a strong showing at this year’s U.S. Open at Oakmont and a T10 finish at last year’s Open, Adam Scott missed the cut following a second-round 79. The 45-year-old Australian will need a strong FedExCup finish to keep his streak of consecutive major starts alive. Scott is on pace to reach 100 straight majors at next year’s U.S. Open.
Scott’s fellow countryman, Cameron Smith, the 2022 Open Champion at St. Andrews, also missed the weekend. Smith struggled early Friday finished 8-over.
Sahith Theegala’s difficult run in majors also continued, though he was understandably rusty making his first start back in two months. The American followed an opening-round 71 with a 74 and will miss the cut. A lingering neck injury has nagged Theegala throughout the season.
Min Woo Lee, winner of the Texas Children’s Houston Open, will be cooking from home this weekend. The Australian posted rounds of 74-73, and will miss the cut in three of the four majors this year. His lone made cut coming at the Masters, where he finished 49th.
