Got into golf at a young age through his father, Brad, who held Class "A" Assistant Golf Coach status with the Professional Golfers' Association of Canada.

Father, Brad, spent more than 30 years playing golf "as a professional and journalist in 32 countries worldwide," according to a bio on the website of the Professional Golfers' Association of Canada. Brad was based in Tokyo, Japan for five years in the 1990s, working as a golf writer, instructor, and golf course design consultant. Brad returned to Canada in 1994 and, shortly thereafter, became the Director of Marketing and Sales for a team which launched what eventually became known as GreenTee Country Club Westwood Plateau in Coquitlam, British Columbia (less than 20 miles east of Vancouver). Brad went on to serve as Media Chairman (1995-99) for the Greater Vancouver Open / Air Canada Championship, formerly a PGA TOUR event. Brad also hosted The Golf Show Great Golf Destinations, an internationally syndicated television show, and spent 25-plus years as a trick shot artist who entertained fans around the world.

Brad says the first time A.J. beat him on the golf course was when A.J. was just 12 years old. A.J. birdied the last three holes to shoot 67 from the white tees at GreenTee Country Club Westwood Plateau, while Brad shot a 71.

Claims to be very good at the popular basketball video game NBA 2K.

Played four seasons at Barry University (2019-23), an NCAA Division II program in Miami Shores, Florida. Ewart was credited with 14 collegiate victories, including seven as a junior during the 2021-22 season – which tied a program record previously established by PGA TOUR winner Adam Svensson.

Named the 2022 Division II Jack Nicklaus Award winner, becoming the third Barry player to win the award and following Adam Svensson (2014) and Jorge Garcia (2019).
